Overview

GM2A pseudogene 1 (GM2AP1) is classified as a pseudogene and does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to known genes but generally nonfunctional due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements necessary for gene expression. GM2AP1 is related by sequence to the functional GM2A gene, which encodes the ganglioside GM2 activator protein, but GM2AP1 itself does not serve as a therapeutic target and has no known biological or pathological role. GM2A pseudogene 1 (GM2AP1) is distinct from the functional gene GM2A (ganglioside GM2 activator), which does have clear biological and disease relevance. GeneCards and external sources specifically annotate GM2AP1 as a pseudogene without evidence of protein coding, function, or disease association. Pseudogenes are not typical therapeutic targets and do not interact with drugs or serve as biomarkers. If you are looking for the protein-coding target related to GM2A, refer specifically to the canonical GM2A gene (ganglioside GM2 activator protein), not GM2AP1. GM2AP1 is not employed in molecular targeting, clinical biomarker discovery, drug development, or disease modulation. If further information is required for the functional gene GM2A, this can be provided.
