Overview

Goblet cells are specialized, unicellular epithelial cells primarily responsible for the synthesis and secretion of mucus. They are named for their distinctive goblet- or cup-like shape. Their primary function is to produce gel-forming mucins, high-molecular-weight glycoproteins, which combine with water to form mucus that protects epithelial surfaces from mechanical damage, pathogens, toxins, and dehydration and lubricates passageways.
