Goblet Cell Secretion

Molecular classification
Cellular Process, Physiological Process
01

Overview

Goblet cell secretion is a vital physiological process involving the synthesis and regulated exocytosis of mucins by goblet cells. This secretion forms a protective mucus barrier on epithelial surfaces, particularly in the intestines and respiratory tract. Dysregulation of this process is implicated in various diseases, including asthma, IBD, and cystic fibrosis. The process is influenced by a variety of stimuli (irritants, pathogens and cytokines), and can be therapeutically modulated to address disease pathologies.

Mechanism of action

Varied, depending on the drug. Mucolytics break down mucus; corticosteroids reduce inflammation; bronchodilators improve airway function; CFTR modulators correct defects in chloride transport in cystic fibrosis.
