Overview

The Golgi apparatus is a membrane-bound organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. It functions primarily as a central hub for modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids that have been synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), preparing them for transport to their final destinations within or outside the cell. Its dysfunction has been implicated in various diseases including neurodegenerative disorders and cancer due to defects in protein/lipid trafficking or post-translational modifications.
