Overview

Golgi associated kinase 1B (GASK1B) is a protein encoded by the GASK1B gene (previously known as FAM198B or C4orf18), mapped to human chromosome 4. Predicted to be a kinase based on sequence homology, it is localized primarily to the Golgi apparatus and is suggested to participate in protein phosphorylation and possibly regulation of kinase signaling pathways. GASK1B is expressed in several tissues, including nerve and epithelial cells during development, and may have roles in cellular signaling and development. Indirect evidence links FAM198B with tumor suppression and inhibition of metastasis in lung adenocarcinoma, potentially through modulation of ERK-mediated matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) expression. However, there are no approved drugs or biomarker applications for this protein, and its complete physiological and therapeutic relevance remains to be defined. Summary points: - GASK1B is a protein kinase-like molecule associated with the Golgi apparatus. - It may act as a putative tumor suppressor in cancers such as lung adenocarcinoma but is not a current drug target. - The gene goes by numerous aliases, often reflecting historical naming. - There is currently no direct evidence of clinical drugs, approved biomarkers, or established safety concerns related to this gene/protein.
