Golgin subfamily A member 5 (GOLGA5) is a coiled-coil membrane protein and a member of the golgin family that localizes to the Golgi apparatus, an organelle central to the glycosylation and transport of proteins and lipids. GOLGA5 is involved in the maintenance of Golgi structure, specifically stimulating the formation of Golgi stacks and ribbons, and plays a role in intra-Golgi retrograde transport and vesicle tethering/docking. Chromosomal translocations involving GOLGA5 and the RET proto-oncogene have been identified in certain tumor tissues, where chimeric fusions (e.g., RET-II) are linked to thyroid cancer. There is currently no evidence that GOLGA5 itself is a therapeutic drug target, biomarker, or associated with notable drug safety concerns.
