Overview

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion refers to the process by which specialized neurons in the hypothalamus synthesize and release GnRH, a key peptide hormone that regulates reproductive function in both males and females. GnRH is released in a pulsatile manner into the hypophyseal portal system, where it travels to the anterior pituitary gland and stimulates gonadotrope cells to secrete luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). The pulsatility of GnRH secretion is critical for its function. Sex steroids such as testosterone (males), estradiol/progesterone (females) exert negative feedback on hypothalamic GnRH neurons.
