Overview

Goose parvovirus (GPV) and Goose astrovirus (GAstV) capsid proteins are the primary structural components of two major viral pathogens affecting the poultry industry, particularly goslings. GPV, a member of the Parvoviridae family, has a capsid composed of VP1, VP2, and VP3 proteins, with VP2 being the most abundant and the primary target for neutralizing antibodies (NCBI: TaxID 10804). GAstV, an Astroviridae member, encodes its capsid protein via the ORF2 gene, which is essential for viral attachment and entry into host cells (PubMed: 32824115). These proteins are often grouped together in therapeutic contexts because GPV and GAstV frequently co-infect geese, leading to severe diseases such as Derzsy's disease and visceral gout. Therapeutic strategies primarily involve the use of bivalent vaccines, including recombinant subunit vaccines that express both GPV VP2 and GAstV capsid proteins to provide broad protection (PubMed: 34153345). By targeting these capsid proteins, the immune system can prevent the viruses from initiating infection, thereby reducing mortality and morbidity in goose populations.
