Overview

GPAT4 antisense RNA 1 (GPAT4-AS1, also known as GIAT4RA) is a human long non-coding RNA gene transcribed from the antisense strand of the GPAT4 locus. Like other antisense RNAs, it does not code for a protein but instead functions at the RNA level. Recent evidence indicates that GPAT4-AS1 acts as a tumor suppressor in non-small cell lung cancer, inhibiting cancer cell proliferation or progression. Antisense lncRNAs are thought to regulate their sense gene partners, or other downstream targets, through a variety of mechanisms including transcript interference, RNA-RNA duplex formation, and chromatin remodeling. There are currently no targeted drugs or recognized biomarkers for GPAT4-AS1, but it is under investigation as a potential therapeutic target and disease modulator, most notably in cancer biology.
