The GPCR19-P2X7 pathway refers to the functional interaction between G protein-coupled receptor 19 (GPCR19, also known as TGR5) and the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R), an ATP-gated ion channel. This pathway is particularly significant in microglial cells of the central nervous system, where it regulates neuroinflammatory responses, especially those implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Activation of the pathway can lead to inflammasome activation and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, while modulation via GPCR19 can temper these effects.
