Overview

GPR50 antisense RNA 1 (GPR50-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA transcribed as an antisense RNA at the GPR50 locus on the X chromosome. It does not encode a protein but is thought to play a regulatory role in gene expression by forming RNA–RNA, RNA–DNA, or RNA–protein complexes. Antisense lncRNAs such as GPR50-AS1 may control expression of their sense protein-coding partners locally and/or affect distant genomic sequences via complementary binding. Their biological activity includes influencing chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation patterns, and alternative splicing. Differential methylation of GPR50-AS1 and related lncRNAs has been implicated in the regulation of cell fate decisions, especially in the development and pathogenesis of B-cell leukemia. However, specific functions for GPR50-AS1 remain largely uncharacterized. Key distinctions: - GPR50-AS1 is not the same as G protein-coupled receptor 50 (GPR50); it does not encode a receptor. - It belongs to the molecular family of antisense non-coding RNAs, not receptors or enzymes.
