Overview

Gram-negative bacteria are a major group of bacteria characterized by their unique cell envelope structure, including an inner membrane, a thin peptidoglycan layer, and an outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Many species are pathogenic, causing a variety of diseases. Their double-membrane system contributes to intrinsic antibiotic resistance, and LPS can trigger strong immune responses. Key structural components like porins and the periplasm are also potential therapeutic targets.
