Gram-Positive Bacterial Cell Wall

Molecular classification
Cell Wall Component, Peptidoglycan, Teichoic Acid, Lipoteichoic Acid
01

Overview

The Gram-positive bacterial cell wall is a critical structure for bacterial survival, characterized by a thick peptidoglycan layer containing teichoic and lipoteichoic acids. It lacks an outer membrane, unlike Gram-negative bacteria. This structure is essential for maintaining cell shape, resisting osmotic pressure, and mediating interactions with the host environment. The peptidoglycan layer is a primary target for many antibiotics, and disruption of its synthesis leads to bacterial death. Resistance mechanisms, such as altered penicillin-binding proteins or peptidoglycan precursors, pose significant therapeutic challenges. Targeting the cell wall is a key strategy in combating Gram-positive bacterial infections.
