Grancalcin (GCA)

Target
GCA
Molecular classification
Calcium-binding protein, Penta-EF-hand protein family, Cytosolic protein
01

Overview

Grancalcin is a cytosolic, calcium-binding protein highly expressed in neutrophils and macrophages, belonging to the penta-EF-hand (PEF) family of proteins[1][2][3][5]. It contains five EF-hand motifs and is involved primarily in calcium-dependent cellular processes, possibly including neutrophil adhesion, migration, and granule-membrane fusion[1][2][3][5]. Its localization within cells depends on the presence of calcium and magnesium: in absence of divalent cations, it is cytosolic, but it associates with granule and membrane fractions under certain cationic conditions[3]. There is currently no evidence that grancalcin is a drug target, biomarker, or associated with specific disease mechanisms in humans, and there are no clinically relevant drugs or established safety concerns related to its targeting[3][5].
