Overview

Granular cell growth is a biological process referring to the proliferation and differentiation of specific cell types characterized by a granular appearance or their location within a 'granular layer' of tissue. In the central nervous system, it specifically pertains to the neurogenesis of granule cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, a process vital for learning and memory that can be impaired by conditions like chronic hyperglycemia [1, 10]. In dermatology, it refers to the development of the stratum granulosum in the epidermis; the loss of this layer is a hallmark of psoriasis, and therapeutic strategies often aim to promote granular cell growth to restore skin barrier function [5, 26]. Additionally, in reproductive biology, the term describes the expansion of granulosa cells in the ovarian follicle, which is essential for oocyte maturation [3, 19]. Because it describes a physiological process across multiple tissues rather than a single molecular entity, it is not classified as a discrete therapeutic target molecule but rather a clinical or histological endpoint.
