Granulocyte apoptosis refers to the programmed cell death of granulocytes, including neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils. This process is essential for the resolution and control of inflammation, preventing tissue damage and promoting non-inflammatory clearance. It can be triggered by the intrinsic (mitochondrial) or extrinsic (death receptor) pathways, both leading to caspase activation and cell dismantling. Dysregulation of granulocyte apoptosis is linked to chronic inflammatory diseases.
Steroids can delay neutrophil but accelerate eosinophil apoptosis. Cytokines and growth factors can either delay or accelerate apoptosis depending on the context.
