Overview

Granulocyte-macrophage progenitor cell (GMP) is a myeloid lineage-restricted progenitor cell found in the bone marrow that arises from common myeloid progenitors (CMP) and gives rise to both granulocyte and monocyte/macrophage cell lineages. GMPs are defined by cell surface marker profiles (such as Lin−, Sca-1−, c-Kit+, CD34+, CD16/32 high in mice) and play a key role in hematopoiesis—the process by which all blood and immune cells are generated[3][4][7]. These progenitors are regulated by cytokines, notably granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), but are not themselves a single protein, receptor, transporter, or classic drug target. Rather, they are a cell population crucial for blood and immune system maintenance and whose dysfunction can contribute to hematologic diseases such as leukemia. This is not a molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme but a cellular population, so it is not a therapeutic target in the classic sense[7]. If the intention was to find a drug target involved in the regulation of GMPs, examples could be "granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor" (GM-CSFR) or key transcription factors (such as GATA-2[3]).
