Granzyme B is a serine protease enzyme primarily found in cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells. It plays a critical role in inducing apoptosis in target cells, contributing to immune defense against viral infections and tumors. Granzyme B initiates apoptosis by activating caspases, cleaving BID, and directly cleaving other substrates that impact apoptotic signaling and cellular proliferation. It also contributes to inflammation and tissue remodeling. Dysregulation of granzyme B is associated with various diseases, including transplant rejection, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
