Grass pollen allergen-specific IgE refers to IgE antibodies that specifically recognize grass pollen allergens, such as Phl p 1 and Lol p family proteins. These IgE antibodies play a central role in the pathogenesis of grass pollen allergies by binding to mast cells and basophils, leading to degranulation and the release of mediators that cause allergic symptoms upon re-exposure to the allergen. Modulation of this IgE response is the primary target of allergen immunotherapy.
Cross-linking of IgE on mast cells/basophils leading to degranulation and release of inflammatory mediators. Immunotherapy aims to modulate the IgE response by inducing tolerance, increasing IgG4 levels, and promoting regulatory T cell activity.
