Overview

GRM3 antisense RNA 1 (GRM3-AS1) is a poorly characterized long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene, transcribed antisense to the GRM3 gene (Glutamate metabotropic receptor 3) on chromosome 7[2]. Functionally, its role is not well established, but single nucleotide polymorphisms affecting or located within the GRM3-AS1/GRM3 locus have been statistically associated with increased risk for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder[2]. There is no evidence that this lncRNA encodes a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other classic protein target suitable for direct pharmacological modulation. GRM3-AS1 may be relevant for gene regulation or as a genetic biomarker in genome-wide association studies, but no direct biological function, druggability, or validated disease mechanism has been established. This entry does not represent a classical "target" such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. Instead, it is an antisense non-coding RNA with speculative regulatory functions. It should not be conflated with GRM3, which encodes the metabotropic glutamate receptor 3—a validated therapeutic target implicated in brain disorders[1][3][4][5]. If you meant to refer to GRM3 (the protein-coding gene) or its protein product, see entries under "metabotropic glutamate receptor 3" or "GRM3."
