Target intelligence / Profile preview
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) capsular polysaccharide type Ia is a high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer of the bacterial cell envelope of GBS serotype Ia. It is a major virulence factor, enabling GBS to evade host immune responses and contributing to its pathogenicity. It is composed of repeating pentasaccharide units containing glucose, galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, and sialic acid. Antibodies targeting this polysaccharide are protective, making it a key target for vaccine development.
Antibodies targeting the capsular polysaccharide promote opsonophagocytosis and complement-mediated killing of GBS.
