The Group B Streptococcus type Ia capsular polysaccharide is a high-molecular-weight, surface-exposed carbohydrate composed of a repeating pentasaccharide unit that includes glucose, galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, and sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid). The immunodominant side chain terminates in α-(2→3)-linked sialic acid, a motif shared among several GBS serotypes and critical for evasion of complement and phagocytosis. This capsule is a key virulence factor, protecting the bacteria from host immunity. Its type-specific structure enables precise serotyping and is the primary antigenic target for both natural and vaccine-induced immunity. Capsular polysaccharides from various GBS serotypes, including type Ia, are under development as part of conjugate vaccines to prevent neonatal and maternal GBS infections.
Vaccines: Induce production of capsular polysaccharide–specific antibodies that opsonize and promote phagocytic killing of GBS.
