Growth arrest-specific protein 1 (GAS1)

Target
GAS1
Molecular classification
Other (membrane-associated protein), Tumor suppressor, Hedgehog pathway co-receptor
01

Overview

Growth arrest-specific protein 1 is a 345-amino acid cell membrane-associated protein that blocks cell cycle progression (prevents entry into S phase) and induces apoptosis, acting as a putative tumor suppressor. GAS1 modulates the activity of the RET receptor in a ligand-independent manner and acts in the Hedgehog signaling pathway as a co-receptor, regulating organ development and maintaining cellular quiescence. It is highly expressed in the central nervous system and some peripheral tissues, and loss of function is linked to increased cell proliferation in tumors and developmental abnormalities such as kidney hypoplasia. GAS1's tumor suppressor activity is thought to contribute to decreased progression and metastasis in certain cancers, while its developmental roles are critical in the CNS and kidney.
