Cytoskeletal linker protein, Other (Actin/tubulin cross-linking factor protein)

Overview

Growth arrest-specific protein 2-like 3 (GAS2L3) is a cytoskeletal linker protein that binds both actin filaments and microtubules. It plays an essential role in coordinating cell division, particularly during late mitosis and cytokinesis, by localizing to the spindle midzone and midbody where it facilitates actin and microtubule organization. GAS2L3 is tightly regulated by cell cycle machinery (notably the APC/C Cdh1 complex) and is required for proper abscission, the final step of cell division. Deficiency in GAS2L3 impairs cytokinesis, leading to multinucleation and developmental defects including heart formation problems. Elevated expression of GAS2L3 correlates with poor prognosis in certain tumors such as glioma, indicating potential utility as a prognostic biomarker, but it is not established as a direct therapeutic target nor are there known drugs that act via this molecule[1][4][5][7][8][9].
