Overview

Growth arrest-specific protein 7 (GAS7) is primarily expressed in terminally differentiated brain cells, especially mature cerebellar Purkinje neurons, where it may promote neuronal maturation and differentiation. GAS7 contains domains similar to those in synapsins and certain transcription factors, suggesting roles in cytoskeletal regulation and possibly gene expression. It has been implicated in morphological neuronal development, with reduced expression interfering with neurite formation and overexpression promoting neurite-like outgrowth. GAS7 is not generally considered a direct therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, but it is associated with some diseases, including specific neurodegenerative conditions and glaucoma[1][2][3][6].
