Growth factor receptors on dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are a diverse group of transmembrane proteins, primarily receptor tyrosine kinases, that play a pivotal role in regulating the hair follicle growth cycle (MDPI, 2024). Located in the mesenchymal compartment at the base of the hair follicle, these receptors—including Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R), Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), and Fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1)—respond to paracrine and autocrine signals to control the transition between the anagen (growth), catagen (regression), and telogen (resting) phases (NIH, 2025; ResearchGate, 2020). Activation of these receptors stimulates the proliferation of hair matrix cells and promotes angiogenesis, which is essential for maintaining follicle size and hair shaft production (Karger, 2020). In conditions like androgenetic alopecia, the signaling through these receptors is often diminished or countered by inhibitory factors like Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) (NIH, 1996). Therapeutic interventions often aim to stimulate these receptors or increase the availability of their ligands to treat hair loss and promote hair regeneration (StemCellsGroup, 2024). While drugs like minoxidil indirectly influence these pathways by upregulating growth factor expression, newer regenerative therapies like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) directly deliver a cocktail of ligands to these receptors (StemCellsGroup, 2024).
