Growth performance

01

Overview

Growth performance is a phenotypic and physiological metric used to evaluate the rate of growth and efficiency of nutrient conversion into body mass within an organism, particularly in the fields of animal science, aquaculture, and clinical pediatrics [1, 4, 11]. It is not a discrete molecular target, such as a protein, receptor, or enzyme; rather, it represents a composite biological outcome influenced by a multitude of endocrine and metabolic pathways [8, 10]. The primary regulators of this trait include the Growth Hormone (GH) and Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling axis, which promotes protein synthesis and skeletal muscle development through the activation of downstream cascades like the mTOR and AKT pathways [11, 14]. While not a target itself, growth performance is the primary clinical or production endpoint for drugs that interact with specific molecular targets like the Growth Hormone Receptor (GHR) or IGF-1 Receptor (IGF-1R) [2, 4, 13]. Understanding the molecular underpinnings of growth performance allows for the development of therapeutic interventions to treat growth disorders or optimize production efficiency in livestock [1, 15].
