Overview

GS homeobox 2 (GSX2) is a DNA-binding transcription factor belonging to the homeobox protein family. It regulates gene expression critical for brain development, particularly during embryogenesis. GSX2 is essential for the specification and differentiation of neuronal progenitors in the telencephalon, including the generation of striatal neurons and olfactory bulb interneurons. Dysregulation or mutation of GSX2 is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as diencephalic-mesencephalic junction dysplasia syndrome 2. GSX2 acts by binding specific DNA sequences to control downstream gene expression involved in neural development and differentiation, but it is not currently a direct therapeutic target.
