GSN antisense RNA 1 (GSN-AS1)

Target
GSN-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA, antisense RNA
01

Overview

GSN antisense RNA 1 (GSN-AS1) is a long non-coding antisense RNA gene located on chromosome 9. It is not translated into protein and acts by regulating gene expression, often through epigenetic and transcriptional modulation. GSN-AS1 is upregulated in osteosarcoma and has been suggested as both a biomarker and therapeutic target for this cancer[1][3][5]. Its dysregulation has also been reported in other cancers, including downregulation in breast cancer. The precise biological mechanism often involves cis- or trans-regulation of gene expression, and it is part of a growing class of antisense long non-coding RNAs that play critical roles in cancer pathogenesis[1][4]. No current drugs directly target GSN-AS1, but its profile makes it a candidate for future RNA-based therapies.

Mechanism of action

Antisense RNA interaction, mainly affecting gene expression through cis or trans regulation, sometimes serving as a ceRNA or modulating the stability/transcription of target mRNAs

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expressionEpigenetic modificationModulation of replication, transcription, translation
04

Disease associations

Cancer (upregulated in osteosarcoma tumor samples and implicated in other cancers such as breast cancer, possibly as a tumor suppressor or oncogene in different contexts)
05

Biomarkers

Potential biomarker in osteosarcoma and other cancers due to its differential expression in tumor samples compared to normal tissue
