GTP-binding protein REM 1 (REM1)

Target
REM1
Molecular classification
Small GTPase, Ras-related GTPase (RGK family), Signal transduction protein
01

Overview

GTP-binding protein REM 1 (REM1) is a member of the RGK (Rad, Gem, Rem, Rem2) family of small GTPases. It acts as a regulator of voltage-dependent calcium channels, inhibiting their activity and therefore influencing cellular calcium influx. REM1 is primarily implicated in cardiovascular tissue, where it helps regulate electrical activity and contractility in the heart. Unlike RRAD, clinical or translational links to disease are limited for REM1, but its paralogs such as RRAD are associated with cardiac and metabolic disorders.

Other names
GTPase-regulating endothelial cell sprouting proteinRad and Gem-like GTP-binding protein 1REM1_HUMANREM (occasionally)
02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (no drugs known); general mechanism: inhibition of voltage-dependent calcium channels affecting cellular excitability

03

Biological functions

Negative regulation of voltage-dependent calcium channel activityRegulation of cardiac electrical activityModulation of insulin secretionSignal transduction
04

Disease associations

Cardiac arrhythmia (via disruption of calcium channel regulation)Potential involvement in metabolic or cardiovascular disease (by analogy to RRAD and GEM roles)
05

Safety considerations

None specifically reported for REM1 as a drug target; theoretical concerns relate to cardiac conduction and potential arrhythmia risk due to calcium channel regulation.
