Overview

Guanine nucleotide-binding protein G(t) subunit alpha-3 (GNAT3) is the alpha subunit of a heterotrimeric G protein primarily involved in the transduction of bitter, sweet, and umami taste signals from taste receptor cells. It transduces signals from specific cell-surface taste receptors (TAS1R and TAS2R families), activating intracellular effectors such as phosphodiesterase, reducing cAMP and cGMP, and ultimately increasing intracellular calcium to lead to neurotransmitter release. GNAT3 is expressed in oral epithelium and certain gut tissues, where it also functions as a sensor for luminal sugars, modulating glucose transporter expression and hormone secretion, linking taste perception to metabolic regulation and nutrient absorption. Genetic variants in GNAT3 have been associated with susceptibility to metabolic syndrome and dental caries[1][2][3][7].
