Guanosine monophosphate synthetase (GMPS) is an enzyme that catalyzes the final step in the de novo biosynthesis of guanosine monophosphate (GMP) from xanthosine monophosphate (XMP). This reaction requires glutamine as a nitrogen donor and ATP for energy. GMPS plays a critical role in purine nucleotide metabolism, which is essential for the synthesis of RNA and DNA nucleotides and thus for cell proliferation and survival. Upregulation of GMPS has been implicated in cancer progression, making it a potential therapeutic target.
