Guanylate binding protein pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene, related to GTPase family
01

Overview

Guanylate binding protein pseudogenes are DNA sequences derived from GBP genes, which encode large GTPases induced by interferons and involved in immunity[2][4][8]. Pseudogenes, by definition, have lost protein-coding ability due to disabling mutations, truncations, or lack of regulation, and do not typically yield functional mRNA or protein[3][5]. While GBP proteins play important roles in immune signaling and pathogen defense, GBP pseudogenes are not known to have direct biological functions or disease involvement. In some cases, pseudogenes can regulate gene expression indirectly, such as by acting as RNA decoys for microRNAs, but there is no specific evidence or characterization of functional roles for the guanylate binding protein pseudogene ENSG00000233235[3][7]. As a pseudogene, it is not a valid therapeutic target for drug development or direct disease modulation.
