Guanylyl Cyclase (GC)

Target
GC
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Lyase
01

Overview

Guanylyl cyclase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) to cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), a critical second messenger involved in numerous physiological processes. It exists in two main forms: soluble guanylyl cyclases (sGC), activated by nitric oxide, and membrane-bound/particulate guanylyl cyclases, activated by peptide hormones. cGMP generated via guanylyl cyclase signaling acts as an intracellular second messenger with diverse roles in smooth muscle cells, neurons, kidneys/intestines/retina/bone/cartilage.

Mechanism of action

Catalyzes the conversion of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) to cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), a critical second messenger involved in numerous physiological processes. Soluble guanylyl cyclase is activated by nitric oxide binding to its heme group.
