Overview

Guanylate cyclase 2C (GUCY2C), also known as guanylyl cyclase C (GC-C), is a transmembrane receptor enzyme primarily expressed in the intestinal epithelium and a subset of hypothalamic neurons. Upon binding to its ligands, such as guanylin, uroguanylin, or E. coli heat-stable enterotoxin, it catalyzes the production of cGMP, a second messenger that regulates fluid and electrolyte balance and intestinal epithelial homeostasis. GUCY2C is a therapeutic target and biomarker for gastrointestinal malignancies, particularly colorectal cancer.
