Guanylate cyclase soluble subunit alpha-2 is a component of the soluble guanylyl/guanylate cyclase (sGC) enzyme complex. sGC catalyzes the conversion of GTP to cyclic GMP (cGMP) in response to nitric oxide (NO) signaling. cGMP acts as a second messenger involved in various physiological processes including vasodilation, smooth muscle relaxation, platelet aggregation inhibition, and neurotransmission. Dysregulation or mutations affecting sGC function have implications in cardiovascular diseases. Pharmacological activators/stimulators targeting sGC are being explored for therapeutic use.
sGC stimulators activate the enzyme to increase cGMP production.
