Guanylyl cyclase 2C (GUCY2C), also known as guanylate cyclase C, GC-C, or the heat-stable enterotoxin receptor (hSTAR), is a membrane-bound enzyme and receptor primarily expressed on the apical surface of intestinal epithelial cells. It plays a central role in regulating intestinal fluid and electrolyte secretion, maintaining homeostasis, and has emerging significance in gastrointestinal cancer biology. Activation of GUCY2C leads to increased cGMP production, stimulating chloride and bicarbonate secretion and inhibiting sodium absorption.
Agonists stimulate cGMP production, leading to increased chloride and bicarbonate secretion and decreased sodium absorption in the intestines.
