The Guanylyl Cyclase A receptor (GC-A), also known as natriuretic peptide receptor-A (NPRA or NPR1), is a transmembrane receptor and enzyme that primarily binds atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Activation of GC-A leads to the production of cGMP, a second messenger involved in regulating blood pressure, blood volume, cardiac growth, and energy balance. It is highly expressed in the heart, vascular smooth muscle, and kidneys.
ANP/BNP binding activates intracellular guanylyl cyclase domain, leading to cGMP production and downstream signaling.
