Overview

Guinea pig trachea is a biological tissue preparation derived from the domestic guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), widely utilized in respiratory pharmacology as an ex vivo model (Castillo and de Beer, 1947). It is not a single molecular target but rather a complex organ-level system containing multiple receptor types, including muscarinic, adrenergic, and histaminergic receptors (ChEMBL, 2024). Historically, the guinea pig tracheal chain or strip assay has been a gold standard for evaluating the potency and efficacy of bronchodilators, antihistamines, and anti-inflammatory agents (PubChem, 2024). The tissue is particularly sensitive to histamine-induced bronchoconstriction, making it an ideal model for studying allergic airway responses and screening potential treatments for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While it provides valuable insights into smooth muscle mechanics and receptor pharmacology, its utility is limited by species-specific physiological differences compared to humans (National Institutes of Health, 2023).
