Inflammatory mediators in gum tissue constitute a diverse set of signaling molecules produced by host immune cells (macrophages, neutrophils, lymphocytes) and resident cells (fibroblasts, epithelial cells) in response to pathogenic bacteria. Key mediators include cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and chemokines which promote recruitment and activation of immune cells. Prostaglandins and matrix metalloproteinases further contribute to tissue destruction and bone resorption. These mediators orchestrate the progression from acute inflammation to chronic periodontal disease, influencing local tissue breakdown as well as links to systemic disease processes. Their measurement in bodily fluids can serve as biomarkers for disease progression, and modulation of individual mediators forms the basis of emerging targeted therapies for periodontal and systemic inflammatory diseases.
