Overview

GUSB pseudogene 17 is a genomic locus classified as a processed pseudogene, meaning it arose from retrotransposition of GUSB mRNA and subsequent integration into the genome[4]. Pseudogenes such as GUSBP17 do not encode active protein products due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements and have no known function in metabolism, signaling, or disease outside rare instances where pseudogene transcripts might affect gene regulation[4]. GUSBP17 should not be confused with the functional **glucuronidase beta (GUSB)** gene, which encodes the enzyme beta-glucuronidase important for glycosaminoglycan degradation and is implicated in mucopolysaccharidosis type VII[1][3][5]. There is no evidence that GUSB pseudogene 17 is a drug target, receptor, enzyme, or otherwise relevant for pharmacological intervention. The *canonical functional gene* in this family is **GUSB (glucuronidase beta)**[1][3][5]. *Pseudogenes* have specific molecular signatures: for processed pseudogenes, integration into the genome occurs via retrotransposition and they typically lack regulatory sequences and protein coding capacity[4]. *Not a drug target*: GUSBP17 should not be confused with the true enzyme target GUSB, which is referenced in metabolic and lysosomal disorder research[1][3][5].
