Ensembl records GUSBP18 as a transcribed pseudogene (ENSG00000215158), with no association with disease, therapy, or protein function. Many pseudogenes for the true GUSB gene exist, but only the canonical GUSB gene provides a functional enzyme with defined biological and pathological roles; GUSBP18 is not one of these. Pseudogenes like GUSBP18 arise during genome evolution and are often considered non-functional, though rare exceptions of regulatory function exist. There is no evidence that GUSBP18 has such roles.
