Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT)

Target
GALT
Molecular classification
Lymphoid Tissue, Immune System Component
01

Overview

Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) is a major component of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and plays a critical role in the immune system by protecting the body from invasion through the gut. It is considered one of the largest and most important immune compartments, accounting for about 70% of the body's immune system by weight. GALT initiates adaptive immune responses against pathogens while maintaining tolerance to food antigens and commensals—crucial for intestinal homeostasis. Compromised or depleted GALT can significantly weaken overall immunity.
