Overview

Gastrointestinal bacteria are a highly diverse group of microorganisms residing in the human gastrointestinal tract, collectively referred to as the gut microbiota or intestinal microbiota. They play vital roles in digestion, immune function, metabolism, and maintenance of gut barrier integrity. Gut bacteria can also metabolize drugs and dietary compounds, influence the risk of infections, inflammation, and chronic diseases (such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer), and communicate with other organ systems via metabolic and signaling pathways. Although modulation of gut bacteria is an area of therapeutic interest (e.g., with antibiotics, probiotics, or enzyme inhibitors), “gastrointestinal bacteria” is not a single molecular target but a community comprising hundreds of distinct bacterial species, each with individual roles and potential relevance for drug targeting or disease association.
