Because "gut barrier function maintenance" is not a discrete molecular target but rather a complex physiological process involving multiple cell types and molecules (such as tight junction proteins like claudins/occludins/zona occludens), it should not be classified as an individual therapeutic target in the same sense as receptors or enzymes.
