Overview

Gut lumen solutes refer to the diverse array of ions, nutrients, metabolic byproducts, and toxins present within the gastrointestinal tract (StatPearls, 2023). While not a single molecular target like a protein or receptor, the composition and concentration of these solutes are therapeutically manipulated to treat various systemic and localized conditions (PubMed, 2021). For instance, osmotic laxatives like polyethylene glycol increase the concentration of non-absorbable solutes to draw water into the lumen, thereby facilitating bowel movements (NIH, 2022). In patients with chronic kidney disease, specific solutes such as phosphate or potassium are targeted by oral binders like sevelamer or patiromer to prevent their absorption into the bloodstream (Journal of Renal Nutrition, 2020). Additionally, lactulose is used to trap ammonia in the gut lumen by altering the pH, preventing its systemic absorption in hepatic encephalopathy (American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2019). Consequently, the gut lumen serves as a critical compartment for pharmacological intervention through the sequestration or osmotic manipulation of its solute profile.
