Overview

The gut microbial ecosystem and intestinal mucosal environment comprise a vast community of microorganisms and the physical/chemical barrier of the host's gastrointestinal tract (NIH, 2023). This system is essential for maintaining homeostasis, as it regulates nutrient metabolism, vitamin synthesis, and the development of the host's immune system (StatPearls, 2023). Recent advancements have led to the approval of standardized microbial consortia for treating recurrent infections (FDA, 2023). Unlike traditional single-molecule targets, this environment requires a systems-biology approach to account for the complex interactions between diverse species and host tissues.
