Overview

The gut microbiota refers to the diverse community of microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tracts of animals, particularly humans. It plays a crucial role in fermentation, vitamin synthesis, immune system modulation, and maintaining gut barrier integrity. Its composition is influenced by diet, antibiotics, age, and genetics. Alterations in the gut microbiota (dysbiosis) are associated with various diseases, including obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic syndrome, and cancer.

Mechanism of action

Antibiotics: Disrupt bacterial cell wall or inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Prebiotics: Promote growth of beneficial bacteria by providing substrates. Probiotics: Introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut. FMT: Replenish depleted microbial diversity and restore gut homeostasis.
