The gut microbiome–host intestinal interface is the functional and physical zone where trillions of microorganisms (the gut microbiota) interact with the host’s intestinal epithelium and immune system. This interface consists of the mucus and epithelial barrier, antimicrobial peptides, immune cells, and the dense microbial community, and is essential for maintaining host health through regulation of metabolism, immune homeostasis, and protection against pathogens. Disruption of this interface can lead to increased gut permeability, immune dysregulation, and is implicated in a range of diseases including infections, inflammatory disorders, metabolic syndrome, cancer, and neuropsychiatric conditions.
