Overview

The gut microbiome and host-microbiota interface represent a complex biological system comprising trillions of microorganisms that coexist with the human host. This ecosystem performs vital functions, including the fermentation of complex carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids, the synthesis of vitamins, and the education of the host immune system (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2020). It also maintains the intestinal barrier and provides colonization resistance against pathogens like Clostridioides difficile (NIH, 2023). Dysbiosis, or the disruption of this microbial balance, is implicated in various conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and metabolic syndrome (Cell, 2021). Unlike traditional drug targets, this interface is modulated through ecosystem-level interventions such as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), probiotics, and prebiotics rather than single-molecule inhibitors (FDA, 2023). Recent therapeutic advancements include standardized bacterial consortia designed to restore ecological diversity and resolve recurrent infections (Nature Medicine, 2022).
